Violence at Howe Community Park Leaves Multiple Gunshot Victims in the Arden-Arcade Area of Sacramento
Law enforcement in Sacramento are working a gun violence incident that unfolded Saturday evening at Howe Park at the moment officers were shutting down an unlawful assembly of a crowd of several hundred.
Prior to the Shooting
Law enforcement were first dispatched to the park on Howe Avenue shortly before 6:30 Saturday evening after learning of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. Not long after, a second caller reported describing a possible fight occurring at the location.
A sheriff's airship flew over the park but came back with no confirmation of a fight. Even so, it was evident that a massive group had congregated at Howe Park in an unauthorized manner.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Responding units started clearing the unauthorized gathering by surrounding the park and using their vehicle PA systems commanding attendees to vacate the area. Roughly 15 minutes were allotted for the gathering to break up.
At the height of the dispersal effort that 20 to 25 gunshots echoed through the night. Gunfire sparked chaos as hundreds ran. Law enforcement swiftly started finding those who had been shot.
Four People Shot
In total, four individuals were found to have been shot. Those injured — a group of one female and three male victims ranging in age through their in their mid to late twenties — were taken to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Medical personnel reported that two were treated for serious injuries, one sustained moderate wounds, and one had injuries classified as minor. In a positive development, each of the four victims was stable.
The Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department arrived on scene and aided in treating the four victims at website the scene.
The Investigation
Most of the gunfire was believed to have unfolded on Cottage Way close to the Home Depot located at the 2200 block of Howe Avenue. Investigators found extra shell casings throughout the Cottage Way area. Round impacts were also found in the iron perimeter fence near the Home Depot. These findings pointed to that a shooter had been shooting in a southerly direction from Cottage Way targeting the Home Depot. That Home Depot location was put under lockdown while law enforcement worked the area. CSI investigators and detectives continued working late into the evening.
Suspects Detained
Intelligence received via scanner audio confirmed that a vehicle identified as a Kia was pulled over in Solano County. Four suspects were in the vehicle at the time of the stop. Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies were traveling to Solano County to return them to Sacramento for investigation. Surveillance footage revealed that there were two gunmen.
